About
The Black Box

Comedy, Community, Improv

The Black Box Improv Theater has been serving everything from giggles to guffaws since 2012. In that time, we’ve produced countless shows, celebrated hundreds of students who have completed all levels of our improv program, and built a welcoming community grounded in collaboration and creativity.

When you produce four new shows every week, a format is the closest you can get to a script. Each night brings one or two new formats, and improvisers get to do what they do best, showcasing their comedic genius.

“Improv gives adults a chance to use their imagination again.” - Kevin, Level 3 instructor

It takes more than quick thinking and perfect timing to land jokes on stage. Each of our performers has completed all three levels of our improv program right here in the theater, spending hours learning to work together on stage, discovering each other’s comedic instincts, and finding new ways to take the ridiculousness to the next level.

Why Improv?

People join our improv classes for all kinds of reasons—trying something new, improving communication skills, meeting new people… We’ve heard it all. But if you ask any of our improvisers what their biggest challenge was when they first hopped on stage, you’re sure to hear a common response: getting over their fear and getting off the wall.

We know finding your confidence can be scary, but it’s also a must. Here’s the good news: we have a 100% success rate at making it fun. By the end of level one, those fears are in the rear-view mirror. The only thing stopping you from catching a laugh on stage is… Well. YOU.

Take it from our level 3 graduate, Brian: “Level one is about putting yourself out there—learning to be a little awkward or zany and being okay when it doesn’t work out.”

Each class builds on the last, and all the while, you’re building relationships with those around you. By the final level, performers are experimenting with characters, formats, and their own comedic voice.

Alright, alright, we’ll let you in on a few secrets.

  1. Yes And: It’s Improv 101, and it’s how you build a scene. To “Yes and” is to accept what someone has said as truth (yes) and add to that reality (and). In improv, this is the best way to build and maintain momentum.
  2. Get off the wall: When Natasha Bedingfield said, “Release your inhibitions,” we really felt that. But to do it, you have to step into the spotlight. If you need to, drag a teammate with you! Who caaares about embarrassing yourself? It’s only awkward if you make it awkward.

Psst, sometimes the best thing to do is make it awkward.

  1. It’s not just about being funny: One of the biggest surprises people discover when they try improv is that the goal isn’t just comedy → “Improv is collaborative storytelling. It’s about connecting, communicating, and listening.” - Brian

There’s a lot more to learn. We could get into it here, but we’d need a lesson plan, you’d have to practice, and it would take weeks.
